Eiffel tower paris It is very common to have to transfer from one train station to another in Paris. So we have compiled a list of routes and estimated travel times for transferring from train stations in Paris. In case you haven’t booked your tickets yet, just click here to buy the cheapest train tickets in Europe.

Just click on your arrival station to find out all of the necessary information.

  1. Gare du Nord
  2. Gare de Lyon
  3. Gare de l’Est
  4. Gare d’Austerlitz
  5. Gare Saint Lazare
  6. Gare Montparnasse

All train stations in Paris are designated terminus stations. This means they will only receive trains arriving or departing from a certain direction e.g. from the south-east of France.

If you are arriving from the north and need to connect to a train heading south, then you will need to change stations. For instance, if you are taking a train from London to Nice, you will have to change from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon. In this case you will usually be be given between 50 minutes to 2 hours for transferring. If you are travelling with children, are less mobile or have a large amount of luggage then we would advise to have a connection time of at least of 1 or longer, especially if you are taking the metro.

If you would like to customize your connection time and spend a few hours or an evening in Paris, you can always just book two separate tickets.

1. Gare du Nord

Trains from Gare du Nord

Gare du Nord (North Station) is the busiest railway station in Europe and the busiest in the world outside of Japan. With 190 million people passing through the station each year, it comes to no surprise that plenty of trains arrive and depart from here. Plus it also has its own claim to fame, Gare du Nord featured in films such as The Bourne Identity and Ultimatum and Ocean’s Twelve. Some would say it’s Matt Damons favourite station…
The name Gare du Nord is not derived from the station’s location (it is in the 10th arrondissement – 18 Rue Dunkerque, 75010) but instead from the destinations it serves. Trains departing from Gare du Nord travel to northern France, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. So essentially anywhere north of Paris.

For example, you will find the following trains departing and arriving at Gare du Nord:

This means you will find all TGV Nord, Thalys and Eurostar trains arriving and departing from here. Gare du Nord also serves as a big regional transport hub for Parisian Metro and RER lines. Arrivals and departures from here are super easy. If you would like more information about departure platforms and real-time service updates, just click here buy train tickets france

Gare de Lyon

P1210896_Paris_XII_gare_de_Lyon_rwk Paris Gare de Lyon Station sees over 90 million passengers per year pass through its doors. This makes it France’s 3rd busiest station and one of Europe’s most popular train stations. It is located on the north bank of the Seine river in the 12th Arrodissement of Paris. It also houses the Le Train Bleu restaurant, which has served countless celebrities and travellers since 1901 (a bit pricey but it’s really worth a try!). As with all other stations in Paris, Gare de Lyon’s name does not derive from its location (otherwise it would be in Lyon of course!). Instead it is named after the city of Lyon, as the majority of trains will pass through Lyon en route to southeren and eastern France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Spain.

The follwing popular routes depart from Paris Gare de Lyon:
